Under One Roof

Beginning in May 2011 numerous discussions were had between COTS and Housing Partnership staff regarding the ability of single individuals who are faced with various disabilities or physical/mental health barriers to live independently. The conclusion was that separately many won't be able to function independently on a long term basis and would end up back into shelter or on the streets. Yet collectively, with the proper matching, along with after care, these strategically matched individuals stand a greater chance for maintaining permanent housing. After doing some research, both agencies decided to collaborate and develop this type of housing. The Housing Partnership would provide the housing and serve as the landlord, and COTS would provide the after care services to the individuals.

In July 2011 the Housing Partnership successfully applied for a State Community Housing Development Grant to purchase a 4-bedroom home to serve as permanent supportive housing for up to four unrelated adults who understand each other's strengths and weaknesses. Together they can provide support and assistance and instinctively know when to ask for outside help. As a group they complement each other and what one doesn't understand someone else will. COTS will provide case management/aftercare throughout their tenancy. On October 14th, the Housing Partnership officially became the owner of a 4-bedroom property that will now be home to Armand, Jimmy, Bruce and Guy.

Collaboration for the sake of collaboration is not sustainable if it does not also meet the missions of the organizations. This program, Under One Roof, fulfills the mission of the Housing Partnership in providing quality affordable housing to low income households; and COTS mission to end homelessness. The possibilities to address social change are endless; achieving social change collaboratively…priceless.
