Stories From Our Families

Who are we serving right now? How are they doing? Here are some spotlight stories from our Supportive Services team. At the bottom is a link to V.'s full story, as written by her.

K. is a single mother of two who has been living in the Housing Partnership transitional housing program for the past 20 months after experiencing homelessness.  K. works as a caregiver for a nursing home part time while pursuing her college education.  The transitional housing program has allowed K to afford a safe apartment for her family while working on her goals for higher education.  It has also allowed her the opportunity to repair her credit and rental history.   We are happy to report that K has reached her goal and is graduating from an area college in December 2011!!

V. is a young lady who came to The Housing Partnership at the age of 18 after aging out of the foster care system.  She came with no rental experience or family support and has two very young children.  Through life skills and case management services, V obtained employment and learned to manage her time, money and home.  She was also connected to community resources to meet her goals of establishing a positive credit and rental history.  V recently completed 24 months of transitional housing and because of her commitment, was able to transfer into a permanent affordable unit.  With the anxiety of affording safe housing lifted, V can continue to work part time as she attends Fox Valley Technical College to pursue a degree in administration.

C is a single mother of 5 school aged kids who reside in our Permanent Supportive Program.  This is a program for individuals or families that have been homeless AND have a diagnosed disability.   C receives life skills and case management services.  Special attention has been given to the needs of the children to assure they succeed in school.  Through the services of our Child and Youth Resource Specialist (CYRS), the children are receiving appropriate medical and cognitive screenings and services.  The CYRS acts as a liaison between the schools, Mom and all health service providers.  The CYRS also coordinates healthy leisure opportunities for the children, such as YMCA camp and other creative outlets that build positive social skills.  Prior to coming to the Housing Partnership, the family struggled to meet their basic needs and the children missed a lot of school days.  Now all are thriving in school and C has been working for the same employer for the past 5 years.
